Roku has announced its latest streaming device, the 2024 Roku Ultra, on the same day Google launches its new TV Streamer. While Google’s device underwent a significant design overhaul, Roku’s new Ultra sticks closely to its familiar look but with key improvements under the hood. Priced at $99.99, it continues to support Dolby Vision and Atmos, but the real enhancements lie in its performance and connectivity.
The 2024 Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any of Roku’s previous players and now comes equipped with Wi-Fi 6, surpassing Google’s streamer, which only features Wi-Fi 5. However, it still trails Amazon’s Fire TV, which includes Wi-Fi 6E. The Ultra also retains an Ethernet jack for those preferring a wired setup. As an HDMI 2.1 device, it supports Quick Media Switching (QMS) for smoother transitions between different content refresh rates, though this feature requires a compatible TV.
Roku has also upgraded its Voice Remote Pro, now featuring backlit buttons, USB-C charging, and new quick launch and live TV buttons. The remote’s new features allow users to access personalized shortcuts, such as favorite apps or voice commands, directly on their TV screen. The device also incorporates advanced machine learning to predict which app a user will open next, leading to faster app load times.
In addition, Roku is refining its user interface, adding a “Kids & Family” zone directly to the homescreen. Content pages now feature thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons to personalize recommendations. The mobile remote app has also been updated, enabling users to swipe up to browse content while using the app.
The question now is whether Roku’s no-frills, dependable box remains a favorite in 2024, or if consumers will gravitate toward new options like Google’s revamped streamer.
